Elgin is the home of roadworks.org – the local and national communications hub for live and planned roadworks, road closures and traffic disruptions.
Elgin started life as a Jacobs Engineering e-Government project in 2004, dedicated to fulfilling the requirements of the 2004 Traffic Management Act and creating a comprehensive roadworks map.
By 2010 coverage had extended across a small portion of England. Central government felt unable to support the investment needed to complete the national picture and fulfil the wider vision of a traffic disruptions hub.
In 2011 Elgin re-launched following a buy-out, led by Shane O’Neill and James Harris. Since then the roadworks.org platform has expanded not just in terms of coverage, but also in its scope and vision. roadworks.org has achieved national coverage (England and Wales) and has become a core part of the national data infrastructure. It operates under a unique public-private governance structure and is one of the best examples of cost saving across local government using a shared service.
Elgin, through roadworks.org, is dedicated to improving traffic conditions and traffic flow. We enable Highway Authorities, utility companies and works contractors to plan, manage and communicate better, helping the economy to grow and improving the daily lives of the travelling public.
Our vision is simple. About 3 million roadworks take place every year. Using roadworks.org on a daily basis, traffic management professionals plan their works more efficiently, reduce costs and communicate disruptions effectively to road users, businesses and residents.
Over 300 official bodies share their information on roadworks.org, spanning motoways, trunk routes and local roads. Our integrated suite of professional tools are used to support a wide range of activities, from planning traffic management such as closures and diversions, to monitoring the live impact of roadworks on congestion. By putting all of this information in one place, we make it easy to access and simple to understand, enabling better coordination and collaboration between authorities, utilities and works contractors.
At the heart of Elgin’s vision is communication. Over 16 million enquiries every year - over 50,000 a day and rising – are answered via roadworks.org. Information is syndicated to hundreds of other websites, local and national media, social media and sat-nav providers.
Elgin's national dataset powers a wide range of intelligent transport solutions and we are working with some of the world’s most influential tech and navigation companies – including TomTom and Google – to make real-time communication of traffic disruptions a reality.
The result: fewer traffic disruptions, less congestion and more reliable journey times.
